The Dreaded Introduction
Jun. 21st, 2023 09:47 amHello, Dreamwidth, a place I joined without any existing connections! I’m the five billionth middle aged lady in fandom.
I have skirted around the edges of Fandom for most of my life, only rarely attempting to be Part of Fandom, and truthfully I enjoy engaging with other people much better on an individual basis than as part of a community. Something about group dynamics always ends up stressing me out, no matter how friendly other people are. When I was very young this (among other things) got me an Autism diagnosis, but now it seems like even the group-iest Fandom people have Autism diagnoses so I guess I’m just socially broken. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I would not be here if I did not want to maybe sometimes engage with other fans/creators though! Just…I’m not likely to be very active in any communities because the group nature of those rarely works for me. But like. Maybe if it is small and is not constant activity??
I am unlikely to post anything overtly political as I dislike how inescapable that is on other social media platforms. I don’t really love it even when I agree with people as it often reinforces catastrophic thinking that greatly reduces my ability to function in my real world obligations. (Read: I will not follow you if this makes up a lot of your content unless there is some way for me to….not….see it? I heard DW lets you filter content by group of followers but I’m still learning the basics here)
So fannishness in case maybe someone has enough overlap to possibly be friends or recommend fic or…whatever it is people dk nere.
My two great fannish loves are Tolkien’s Legendarium and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I also engage with fanworks for other books and sometimes other media without having a drive to write for any of them. Although…I do have a Cadfael Chronicles story partially written about one of the murder victims…
I am overall drawn to fandom via setting rather than characters and thus prefer canon compliance, world building expansion, OCs/elsewhere fic, gap filling, and textual ghosts. Also, death fic/tragedies. I love me a good unhappily ever after. I also prefer to read one shots. Long fic are such a big commitment unless the author earns my trust via one shots first.
I have zero interest in erotica but will on rare occasion read it if I am already invested in the writer. Same with AU or canon divergence: If I read a bunch from one writer I might take a leap of faith but it is not why I am here.
That said, I do have some characters I am more interested in than others and I even have some ships.
Tolkien’s Legendarium:
Wood-elves
Men
Hobbits
Gorlim the Unhappy
Gorlim/Eilinel
Beren/Luthien
Barahir and his outlaws more generally
Barahir/Emeldir
Elwing/Eärendil
Elwing more generally
Melian/Thingol
Sam Gamgee/Rosie Cotton
Turin
And for non-canon ships:
Beleg/Mablung or Turin/Finduilas/Gwindor and, you know, OC/OC 😂
My interest in Feanorians is only inasmuch as their actions impact other characters.
Harry Potter
The Weasley family in general but especially Molly, Percy, and Ron
Harry/Ginny
Ron/Hermione
Remus/Tonks
The Crouch family (although noting I’m not interacting fannishly with their content atm. I have things on my tbr pile but I have to purge my own brain rot before I can read anyone else’s takes)
Also I read a Snape/Charity Burbage fic once and it made canon so much more painful of course I loved it.
characters and ships from other fandoms I will take recs for. I am more accepting of canon divergence here:
Sailor Moon
Michiru Kaioh
Minako Aino
Usagi Tsukino
Usagi/Mamoru
Haruka/Michiru
Minako Aino/Kunzite
The Egyptian Ministry of Alchemy series
Anything. Is there anything? 😭 this seems to have no fandom
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Sayaka Miki
Sayaka/Kyoko
Star Wars
Luke Skywalker
Finn
Luke Skywalker/Han Solo
Finn/Rey
Padme Amidala/Anakin Skywalker
Wheel of Time
Rand/Mat
Nynaeve/Lan
Perrin/Faile
Elayne/Aviendha (+Rand or Rand/Mat acceptable)
I do read more m/m and f/f than these lists imply-but more often OCs or straight up original fiction (I prioritize ownvoices with original fiction however…)
Anyway. Here I am, finding another place to potentially float around the edges.
